rosco532 Our new copy of 'Camp Snaps' arrived today....Bigger & more information than we expected.....so much better and informative than Camps 4.
Koowee.....swmbo tells me its 24ft x 16ft.
What we do, is use a square dividing tube in the middle to take the 'sag'...plus it keeps the poles spread ...you can buy them in sections and use what uou need......our first try was using a centre type pole with a ...like ''T'' section on the top to support it but that wasn't much chop when the wind came up...
I bought '4' huge sand pegs for the 4 corners to take the extra weight and that works like a charm.
this also worked great when packing up in the rain....We can pack everything up in the dry....then drive under it to load the trailer /patrol...then we only had the tarp to dry out when we got home.
Winter camping means that the meals we prepare need to be warm and filling. This is a wonderful dish to satisfy, EVEN Belinda. The smell of this dish cooking in your camp oven will warm you on any cold evening. Peel your potatoes and slice them thinly. Pre-cook the bacon in preparation ......
Hearty Potatoes in the Camp Oven
Ingredients
8 slices bacon
3 medium potatoes
1 onion
1/2 capsicum
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
2 cups frozen green peas
Method
Cook the bacon until crispy and let it cool. Crumble it into pieces.
Slice potatoes thinly.
Chop onion and capsicum.
Place all ingredients in the Camp Oven.
Cook for approx 30 minutes over a low heat fire.
Just got back from a long weekend at the Upper Yarra Reservoir Park (VIC). I recommend this place for several reasons. It sits in a valley between two ridges that converge east of the site at the dam wall. It is very scenic (no views of the dam wall.) It is a good site for families as there are hot showers and flush toilets. The Yarra River can be accessed, and at this point it is only about 6 metres wide and suitable for kids to paddle in at points. There is plenty of room, both bush and some open space.
The Rangers office is worth a visit for some history of the area.
AND the best bit??? They don't allow many people in for it to be considered to be booked out. They only allow about 100 people (adults & kids) in an area the size of four footy ovals for it to be considered booked out.
State forests are protected areas not as protected as National Parks however the problem with taking pets into them is the same. Pets (all pets) have deseases and mites/fungi/worms etc that are not native and can seriously impact on native animals. This is no matter how clean and loved pets are.
The other problem is irresponsible owners who dont tie their pets up and let them loose to kill small native animals. Or worse still like the person who recently smuggled their pet cattle dog onto Frazer Island only to loose it. The cost to the community for the ground and air search to find this dog is huge and to let it breed with the dingos on Frazer would probebly mean the death of all Frazer Island dingos.
There is also the problem of the gov getting sued because they let people bring their pets and their pets bite someone else. And the large number of people who dont like pets... they are also often the same people who think kids should be banned too.
Unfortunately because experience has shown there are some who do the wrong thing and dont care, everyone is penalised. We grew up camping with our dog, but I see the problems irresponsible campers cause and the cost to the community when the QPWS has to clean up. So now days we take the kids leave the pets at home.
And birds are some of the worst offenders, if you clean out their cage while camping you are spreading desease that can wipe out entire native bird populations. Sometimes the hidden dangers are worse than the obvious.
The ban on pets isnt to punish but to protect what we came to experience. LOL people (except those with special permission) are even banned from some Conservation Parks which are even more protected

Hi, back again. I have found some info on Brooyar State Forest and the camp ground there. It sounds pretty nice so just wondering if anyone has ever been there and can tell me a bit more about it. According to the website we can take our lovely Lab and have a splash in the creek, but not sure about dogs in the rest of the park. A couple of the state forests that allow dogs in the campground dont allow them anywhere else in the park so want to make sure we can take him for walks and not just have him tied up at camp.
Also found a place called Sharp Park River Bend. Has anyone ever been there and can tell me anything else about it?
