TOPIC: Areas to avoid camping

Areas to avoid camping 9 months, 2 weeks ago #4131

Even if the area is open to camping/hiking/floating, I've learned that it is sometimes best to avoid certain areas. This is especially true if one lacks the knowledge or experience to safely navigate the area. Are there any places that someone has been to that they would not recommend anyone going there?

I would be interested in hearing some of this. I am new to this site and trying to pick up as much info as I can about "Oz" and the more the better I say!

Should you avoid certain places because of the wildlife? Or are there other dangerous things in the woods we should be aware of? Maybe camps where people hide?

Maybe camps where people hide? ...ha ha..ha....Your not in the ''U S of A''....now mountaineer.....lol

If there was a 'homeless person'' camping....they are no trouble......& if they 'were hiding'....then you wouldn't see them...

If you see anyone in the outbacks and they look like they need a hand....use your judgement...if you are unsure...drive past and let the police know at the next town.

cheers
Cheers & happy camping

I would really be interested in knowing some of the dangerous places to avoid. Nothing scares me more than a place where people hide or where wildlife constantly attack people.

Hello, my name is Kevin & I'm from Adelaide! This is my 1st post here. My wife & I travel quite a bit to the more remote areas of Aust & the rules we follow are very simple; we always camp with other campers, never alone. We also never camp in free roadside camping grounds unless there are grey nomads/families already present, nor travel after dark if it can be avoided. That way we gain security by having other like minded people around us & we don't hit any cows or kangaroos that run unexpectedly onto the road in front of us at night.

To keep snakes out, simply keep your tent/annexe zipped up at all times & if you're using a sleeping bag, don't unroll it until you're going to use it. We've camped in some pretty remote places & done a lot of walking there too......... snakes just haven't been a problem! Could count the ones we've encountered on one hand & they all just slithered away!

We've slept in a tent while dingoes/wild dogs were howling outside & we've never had a problem with them. Just remember to fold your camp chairs up, or the dogs may use them as a bed! Keep food locked away too! The only things that scare the crap out of me (us!) are salt water crocodiles & they're only found in the tropics! I won't camp anywhere near water in the tropics except the Kimberley, as there are only fresh water crocs there & I'm not on their menu lol!
